THE LIGHT OF OBSERVATION

To be quiet and observant is to have Light,

and without Light you cannot observe.

INDIA, 1966

I was in love with Al by now, but he hesitated taking on raising another child. He was twenty years older than I, and had a married son, daughter-in-law and two little grandchildren. Although I still would have loved to have had a girl, I knew that it would not be appropriate or fair to him.

We talked about our relationship quite a bit, and just as I began to make plans to move to Los Angeles close to Phyllis Krystal, so we could consult and work together—he did propose.

So, after being single for three years, I married Al. I was thirty-three, and it was like stepping into a whole new, different and exciting life. Al always left me free to explore and develop my own work—in fact, he encouraged it. The relationship flowered and grew until his death twenty-five years later.

Our deep interest in the teachings of Krishnamurti is what drew us together, and was the focus of our lives. We went to Switzerland almost every year, heard Krishnaji in the U.S., and were in touch with many friends worldwide.

Al had a love for the tropics. We spent our honeymoon in Hawaii. We went to Costa Rica and enjoyed it tremendously. We bought property, and spent a great deal of time there during the dry season. Al bought a plane, so we could fly back and forth, and we also drove there with a large trailer so we could stay on our property.

However much we enjoyed being there though, however much it seemed like paradise physically, we decided that we did not want to be there all the time. There were not many people interested in Krishnamurti, and not much interest in our work. We had a most unique beach property, with a tremendous power center, which finally became a National Park.

It took many years to work out a property settlement—but that is another long, long story. We did come out very well, though, as the government treated us very fairly. We invested the money, and were in a position to live comfortably without financial worry.

Al was recording all the Talks and Discussions in Saanen. Once, after the first day, he realized that the backup tape on the second tape recorder was only one hour in length, so he replaced it with a longer one. That tape was forgotten in a suitcase, and we only discovered it when we got home. The recordings were always sent back to Ojai immediately, so that there would be no chance of anyone hearing them.

We felt a little guilty having it—in those days no one had any—but listened to it one day, looking at the published booklet at the same time. We were absolutely horrified! The changes of words, the parts left out, the feeling of the continuity and development having been somehow lost—the whole life of the Talk seemed to be missing. Throughout the years, people
